How Breast Reconstruction Works
A clear, step-by-step look at how each of Dr. Li's reconstruction options actually works — so you can understand what's involved before your consultation.
How does breast reconstruction work?
Breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast after mastectomy — using an implant or your own tissue, sometimes in the same surgery. Below, each of Dr. Li's approaches is broken down step by step.
Frequently asked questions
Often, yes. Many of Dr. Li's patients have immediate reconstruction on the same day as the mastectomy, so they never have to "go flat" — though reconstruction can also be delayed when that suits the overall treatment.
For most patients the final step is nipple reconstruction, often with a small local flap, and recreating the areola with 3D nipple-areolar tattooing.
Both are offered. Implant-based reconstruction is the most common; reconstruction with your own tissue (such as a latissimus flap) is also available, including Dr. Li's signature Bra-Line Back Lift–LAT flap.
